Malaysian rider currently competes for Finnish team in Spanish Championship and will move to Grand Prix racing as part of outfit led by Aki Ajo.
The Moto3 World Championship will feature a new Malaysian rider in 2014, in the form of Hafiq Azmi. The 16 year-old rider, born in Kuala Lumpur, will ride a full rookie season as part of the Ajo Motorsport structure’s second team in Moto3. Hafiq Azmi will continue under the tutelage of Aki Ajo, having worked with him this year in the Spanish Moto3 Championship.
After a wild card appearance at his home Grand Prix this season, held at the Sepang International Circuit, and finishing the 2013 campaign as a stand-in rider, Hafiq Azmi’s moment to make a definitive move onto the world stage has arrived. With valuable experience of the KTM Moto3 bike in the Spanish Championship, he is prepared to race against the best in the world on a very similar machine.
Hafiq Azmi follows in the footsteps of Zulfahmi Khairuddin, who is currently in his third year with the Finnish structure.
Aki Ajo – Team Manager:
”We are very happy to continue collaborating with the Sepang International Circuit once again, and to have Hafiq Azmi as part of our structure for 2014. Hafiq Azmi has already been part of our team this year in the Spanish Moto3 Championship, and we are satisfied with his results. With this move, he will follow in the footsteps of Zulfahmi Khairrudin, but will come into the World Championship with an extra year of experience and will be more prepared for the step up. He will also have the good fortune to have a very similar bike at his disposal to that used this year in the Spanish series.”
Razlan Razali – Sepang International Circuit CEO:
”The incorporation of Hafiq Azmi in the Ajo Motorsport structure for the 2014 Moto3 season is great news for us. His experience in the 2013 Spanish Championship makes him better prepared for this challenge. He will be coming into the World Championship as part of a great team, led by Aki Ajo. We are very excited about Hafiq Azmi’s participation in Grand Prix racing next season.”
Hafiq Azmi – Rider:
”I am very happy with this great news. The Sepang International Circuit has given me the opportunity to move up to the World Championship as part of a great team in Ajo Motosport. Not many riders get to be a part of this structure —especially in their first year in the World Championship. I am very proud to be part of the team for next season. The aim for the year will be simply to learn, take things step-by-step and take the best results possible.”
